Annual Physical QA

What is an annual physical?

An annual physical is an opportunity for you and your Linden Medical Group provider to have a conversation about your health and wellness goals.

During a physical, your provider will assess your current health status, note any changes, analyze your health risks, and spot problems early on to treat or prevent them from developing further. Your provider will record your current height and weight, check your blood pressure and pulse, listen to your heart and lungs, look inside your ears and nose, and draw blood to check your cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

This data helps to serve as a marker of your health year-over-year, so you and your provider can identify any change in your health. If you’re due for specific screenings or vaccinations, depending on your age, gender, and medical history, the team will let you know. This is also a time to discuss any health issues or concerns.

I’m healthy. Do I still need a physical?

Even if you’re healthy and have never experienced any major health problems, an annual physical can still be beneficial. In addition to increasing the chances of catching potentially serious issues early on, your annual physical creates a valuable record of your key health measurements, including your blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol levels.

You can discuss any over-the-counter medications you may be taking, get nutrition and exercise recommendations, or ask for tips on improving sleep. Your annual physical also allows you to establish a relationship with your provider. If you develop a more pressing health problem, this physical allows you the opportunity to be more comfortable about seeking treatment.

How should I prepare for my physical?

Before you go to your annual wellness physical, it’s essential to be prepared. Aside from the basic instructions from the Linden Medical Center team, which may include fasting if you’re having bloodwork, you should take some time to review your family history. Make a note of any close relatives with heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. Your provider will include this history in your chart, and keep it in mind when recommending lifestyle strategies to help you prevent illness. Your family history may also prompt your provider to suggest you have additional health screenings. Regardless, you can ask whether you’re due for any specific screenings, such as a mammogram, pap smear, or colonoscopy.

To get the most out of your physical, bring a list of your medications and questions you’d like to ask the doctor, so you won’t forget once the exam is underway.
